Breathing Through the Storm | My Journey to Healthy Habits and Emotional Resilience

Somewhere, I learned I don’t need water, fruits, or vegetables—just air.

Someone had to teach or expose my mom for her to teach me. We both have an emotional relationship with food. Food has been my best friend through my mom’s medical needs and this pandemic. I ate my way until I couldn’t feel anything—not an emotion or being full. I ate until I was numb—exactly where I wanted to be.

I didn’t grow up in a home where drinking water was encouraged, vegetables were cooked regularly, and cut-up fresh fruit was kept in the refrigerator. Some people build bad habits, and others don’t learn good habits to begin with.

I know I need movement as part of my regular routine—I enjoy running—and I equally need to learn more about my triggers, thoughts, and responses to food.

My grandfather and mother struggled with weight their whole life. This is one of many cycles I want to be mindful of. Otherwise, I am on my way to an early heart attack.

Learning about nutrition, breaking habits, and making better decisions is the beginning. This is the journey where I fall down seven times and stand up eight, God willing.
