John Muir High School Alumni include Jackie & Mack Robinson, Octavia Butler, a long list of athletes, and Hall of Famers. I’m proud to be a John Muir Alum.

On April 15, 2022, the Los Angeles Dodgers spent the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson Day honoring the baseball legend’s courage and legacy at John Muir High School. The Dodgers commissioned a mural of Jackie Robinson that was completed in 4 days by muralist Jonas Never, in what I knew as the A-building.

I knew I wanted to see it in person the minute I saw it. I hadn’t been on campus in years.

Let’s rewind.

The day after my 18th birthday, the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education honored me with recognition for “Outstanding Service to John Muir High School and to the Entire Pasadena Unified School District Community.” While in high school, I was the Junior Class President, Co-Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, and played Varsity tennis. I worked in the community and also volunteered.

After college, I served in the Peace Corps doing Youth and Community Development work in Morocco for 2 years. Community is something I have been fortunate to build everywhere I have lived. I recently moved back to Pasadena from the Bay to care for my mom. I’ve been hiding out as I take the time to return to myself.
